Are card rip apps legit? It is two questions
Whether an app pays and ships is one question. What it costs you is another. Here is what each rated app puts in writing on both, and a checklist for any other app.
By Alexander Korsager · Checked 6 October 2026 · We earn nothing from any app on this site
Top rated · graded out of 5
1. Do they pay and ship?
20 of 27 say sell-backs pay cash or stablecoin
27 of 27 say they ship the card. Those are their terms. We have not tested a withdrawal or a delivery.
2. What does it cost you?
8 of 27 publish enough to work it out
At Lastpack, $100 of packs sold straight back returns about $95, at its own published figures.
What “legit” hides
People use one word for three different claims. Each needs different proof.
It pays and ships
- What would prove it
- A dated withdrawal and a delivered card.
- What exists today
- Terms that promise both. No test yet.
It is fair
- What would prove it
- Outcomes counted against the published odds.
- What exists today
- Published odds at 21 of 27 rated apps. Nobody has counted.
It is worth it
- What would prove it
- Average value, sell-back rate and fees, all published.
- What exists today
- Enough to compute it at 8 of 27 rated apps.
So this guide does not call any app “legit”. It shows what is written down, and says where nothing has been tested.

What people worry about most
The top eight questions across six forum threads on rip apps, in the order they came up most.
Bar length shows rank only. The threads were ranked by how often each question appeared, not counted.
Codes and free packs have their own page: free packs and what each costs.
Is it rigged?
The second most common worry. We do not say it is, and we do not say it is not: nobody outside the operators has the data.

The one mainstream first-person test we found treats rip apps as gambling.

A reporter tried Rips by Triumph with $20
- Deposited
- $20
- Packs ripped by recycling sell-backs
- 56
- Peak balance
- $101
- Left at the end
- $0.62
A UCLA gambling researcher quoted in the piece describes ripping alone on a phone as “dopamine isolation”.
- Not tested: a cash withdrawal, shipping a card, the odds, card values.
- Operator: Wired says Rips did not respond to its request for comment.

Is it gambling? The legal position
The lawsuits so far concern live card breaks, not rip packs. They are allegations.
- July 2025Read by usA suit is filed under the California False Claims Act against Whatnot and Fanatics Live, two live-break platforms. It alleges unlicensed lotteries. California's Department of Justice later declines to intervene.ESPN, 20 June 2026
- 3 November 2025ReportedWhatnot is reported to require approval, itemised checklists and audits from sellers of repacks.Sports Illustrated
- Spring 2026Read by usNearly 70 Whatnot customers file arbitration demands alleging that randomised breaks are illegal lotteries. Whatnot says it rejects that characterisation.ESPN, 20 June 2026
- 2 July 2026ReportedWired publishes a first-person test of Rips by Triumph, framed as a gambling story.Wired
- 22 July 2026ReportedAn academic is reported as calling GameStop-style mystery packs unlicensed gambling. That is one researcher's opinion, not a finding by a court or regulator.TheGamer
- 5 August 2026Read by usA law firm's alert points to California Penal Code 319, which defines a lottery, and 319.3, on sports trading card grab bags. It says the arbitration filings are pending with no finding of illegality.Womble Bond Dickinson
“Read by us” means we read the article named, on 6 October 2026, not the court filing. “Reported” means the claim is the publisher's and we have not re-read the article to check our summary of it. Nothing here is legal advice, and we do not say these products are legal or illegal anywhere.
What the operators themselves say: every rated app that states an age limit sets it at 18, and 4 of 27 offer a self-exclusion tool.
Should you rip at all?
Collector forums give the same advice every time: if you want a card, buy that card.
Rip a pack
Buy the card
On 9 of the 12 odds tables we read, most pulls are worth the pack price or less. Decide a limit before you open an app; our responsible play page shows how to block yourself where an app allows it. The National Council on Problem Gambling lists free, confidential help.
Questions people ask
Are card ripping apps legit?
Split it in two. On paying and shipping: 20 of 27 rated apps say sell-backs pay cash or stablecoin and 27 say they ship, in their own terms. On cost: most packs return less than they cost. Nothing has been tested by us yet.
Can you get real cards from rips?
27 of the 27 apps we rate describe physical cards you can have shipped, at your cost. We have not yet received one, so we cannot report on delivery or condition.
Is ripping a good way to make money?
No. Published odds put most pulls below the pack price, and selling back usually takes a further cut. Treat it as paid entertainment with a limit.
Is card ripping gambling?
No court has ruled, in the reports we read. Lawsuits allege that live card breaks are illegal lotteries. A gambling researcher quoted by Wired describes the habit in gambling terms. Operators' terms say otherwise.
