Rips vs casino games: what each keeps

The same $100 through a pack, a blackjack table, a roulette wheel, a slot machine and a scratch card. A casino pays cash. A rip pays a card, so a pack has two readings.

A minus is the average cost of the session; a plus is card value above the price paid, as the app states it. 16 of the 27 rated apps state no average on a public page and have no rung: the cash-back calculator lists what each leaves out. Setting a limit first: responsible play.

A rip pays a card, not cash

That is why a pack has two readings and a casino game has one.

How the casino figures are worked

Roulette and blackjack are sums from the published rules of the game. Slots and scratch cards are results a regulator and a lottery reported.

Roulette, two zeros

36 back ÷ 38 pockets94.74%A number pays 35 to 1 and the stake returns. The wheel holds 36 numbers and two zeros.

Roulette, one zero

36 back ÷ 37 pockets97.30%The same payout on a wheel with one pocket fewer.

Blackjack, 3 to 2

Every hand against every dealer card99.43%The best decision each time, dealer standing on soft 17. Any other play returns less.

Blackjack, 6 to 5

The same hands, a smaller payout97.86%A two-card 21 pays less and the dealer draws on soft 17. Both are allowed in the rules read.

The blackjack sum treats the shoe as endless, so each card is as likely on every draw. A real shoe of six or eight decks moves the figure by hundredths of a point. No surrender or insurance is counted.

What a ladder of averages leaves out

Four things to hold against every rung.

An average

Not a sessionNo single play pays the average: each pays more or less, often nothing. The pack simulator draws the spread for a pack.

Card value

Set by the appThe stated average uses the app's own price for each card. How that price is set is in fair market value explained.

Pace

Not countedA slot or a rip takes seconds. The ladder counts plays, so a faster game puts more stakes through in the same hour.

Sealed booster box

Not confirmedWizards of the Coast states what each of a box's 30 packs can hold and how often, and no card's value. No maker's page read gives a return.
18+
A comparison, not an invitationEvery rung with a cash figure keeps part of the stake on average, and more plays keep more. If you play any of them, set the amount first: limits, lock-outs and free help.

Questions people ask

Are card rips gambling?

That is a question of law, and this page does not answer it. It compares the arithmetic only. What terms, courts and regulators have published is in the guide to whether rip apps are legit.

Why do some packs show a return over 100%?

5 of the 11 apps state an average card value above the pack's price. The value is the app's own figure for its cards. Sold back at the app's rate, none of the packs with a full set of published terms stays at or above 100%.

Does blackjack really return that much?

Only with the best decision on every hand, at a table paying 3 to 2. The same game paying 6 to 5 with the dealer drawing on soft 17 returns 97.86%, and every mistake lowers it further. It is also dealt fast, so many stakes go through in an hour.

Why is there no figure for a sealed booster box?

A return needs odds and a value for every card. The maker's page read here gives the odds for each slot of a pack, such as "A rare (80.4%) or mythic rare (14.2%)", and no value. A box also pays in cards, like a rip.
